Discovery & Definition
Our primary goal during this phase is to identify any “low-hanging fruit” that can generate instant ROI for your company. We assess your current internal environment, including any existing file shares or intranet to give us an idea of the breadth of content and information architecture in your organization. We also want to know about the “personas” of your end-users to help us define an intuitive experience for them.
We then meet with your key departments (e.g. HR, Marketing, Finance, Sales, IT) to get a feel for their typical day-to-day operations and identify any processes we can simplify by integrating into the portal. This ranges from team collaboration, to document management, to approval workflow, to web-enabled forms, to managing existing spreadsheet data from within SharePoint, etc.
Lastly, we define team and project workspace templates to promote inter- and intra-team collaboration. With all of this information in hand, we create an architectural overview of what we’re going to build, and you review and accept this scope prior to moving into the implementation phase.

Implementation
First we Install Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and connect it to a back-end database server (SQL 2000 or 2005). Next, we configure Shared Services, define portal security/roles, and build-out the portal taxonomy based on our agreed-upon scope. Departmental pages, workspaces templates, and any ROI “low-hanging fruit” are also developed during this phase.
Content migration is a variable exercise (e.g. 10 documents vs. 10,000) so we do our best to provide enough substance to each department page, but do not intend on migrating the entire body of content. During the engagement, we gather enough information to provide a separate scope of work detailing the migration effort and associated costs – if deemed necessary.
Note: The web portal and database can live on the same machine, but this will impact performance and we highly recommended at least two servers.

Unveiling & Knowledge Transfer
One department at a time, we unveil and demonstrate the functionality of each departmental page and train each team on how to manage content and make adjustments. This includes teaching end-users how to use the team and project workspaces to maximize productivity.
Maintenance and administration of SharePoint is also a key topic, so we sit down with IT to detail the typical tasks associated with a SharePoint portal. Supporting documentation is provided to act as a reference guide for IT staff.
