Top 10 Technology Trends for 2015

Toward the end of each year Gartner identifies and publishes its predictions for the top 10 strategic technology trends. These trends represent the technologies and practices that businesses can’t afford not to explore in the upcoming year. Now that the end of January is upon us, take a minute and consider whether your company is following these latest technology trends for 2015.

1. Computing Everywhere

More organizations are offering remote work environments for its employees and devices to meet those needs have taken off in the past few years. Now, virtualized environments and users’ personal devices are being added to the mix. IT departments and providers will continue to help manage this more expanded computing environment for employees and customers alike.

2. The Internet of Things

Wearable devices, smart appliances, and other digitized products contribute to the increasingly connected world of everything we do. This off beat but growing trend will continue and businesses would be wise to capitalize on this, as the days of Star Trek are soon upon us!

3. 3D Printing

The manufacturing industry will benefit greatly from improved designs and capabilities of 3D printers, and shipments for these are expected to grow at a very rapid rate in 2015 and 2016. This trend will cause a shift to short-run manufacturing, impacting businesses in every industry, even reaching to outer space where NASA is utilizing a 3D Printer to create tools and parts for space station repairs.

4. Advanced, Pervasive, and Invisible Analytics

Now there are analytics for almost every part of life, and the Internet of Things is only adding to this. Where we go, what we do, and what we like will all be added to a gigantic pool of data that will help businesses better understand how to reach and sway customers.

5. Context-Rich Systems

Systems will become smarter by analyzing their surroundings with help from pervasive analytics. These systems will be better able to deliver what users want by operating within the context of their requests.

6. Smart Machines

Machines will continue to learn from analytics and their environments and act autonomously.

7. Cloud/Client Computing

Cloud computing has already taken hold at many businesses, but it will continue as apps in the cloud can be delivered to any device, allowing for greater mobility in work and our personal lives.

8. Software-Defined Applications and Infrastructure

Applications and elements of networking will be configured by dynamic programming, allowing for scalability and greater flexibility for digital business.

9. Web-Scale IT

Enterprise IT settings will trend toward having the computing capabilities of large web giants such as Amazon and Facebook. Cloud and software-defined models will help make this transition over time.

10. Risk-Based Security and Self-Protection

The fact that security breaches do occur should not stop businesses from progressing in the digital landscape. Application design will be security-aware and risk assessment and mitigation will become more of a focus rather than businesses trying to always prevent security issues.
